Big Bay can only be reached via water or air. A private helicopter from Queenstown over New Zealand’s Southern Alps is how we’ll arrive. Once there, it’s a smorgasbord of good times. A fleet of ATV’s is waiting and ready to rip around the beach on. A sturdy Zodiac is docked in the river next to the cabin for easy access to the waves and world-class lobster diving, ocean fishing and snorkeling. We’ll harvest local green mussels from the shoreline boulders. Fly-fish for brown trout in the river and search for Fiordland’s famous jade along the shoreline. We can also arrange to hunt New Zealand Red Deer for fresh venison. The heli is used to explore Fiordland’s rugged coast, looking for waves while taking in the extraordinary scenery.
Our local contact and guide in Big Bay is a close SB friend whose family has owned land in the area for three generations. He works as a top chef on yachts around the world so prepares amazing meals fresh from our daily harvesting of lobster, mussels, venison, and trout. The accommodation is rustic but comfortable. We stay in the family’s cabin or spacious safari tents. Nightly activities include feasting on lobster, drinking cold beer around a bonfire and playing poker by candlelight. It’s completely off the grid but there is limited wi-fi via satellite for things like checking the weather and surf forecasts along with basic email communication.
